Foucault Reading

Well, when i am at home there arent any survalience cameras around me becuase i live in Upstate, NY. The closest surveillance cameras near my house is the Walmart and other convenient stores because there is a low crime rate in my area. Currently i am in school and there are cameras everywhere. Where i dorm there is a camera in every hall way and I am actually glad that they have them because it does make it safe, especially because of past vandalisms.

They started putting up the cameras around the school because of the vandalised vending machines and with the higher security now of safety aids, University police and night duty RAs the school has gotten alot safer. There have still been occurances and rumors that some of the cameras dont work but i have seen people get caught with the cameras on outside of the dorms. I did not care much but i still understood that there are rules to the consitution of the school so if surveillance cameras have to be a part of our system, I dont mind it.

Doerr Article and Net neutraility

I do agree that media has something to do with us having split personalitys, I could personally agree because i am not a very steady person but if i have my blackberry on me it definitly keeps me busy. There is not 10 mins when i dont look at my Blackberry, and it does give you somewhat of a personality because i dont have to talk to many people if im bored. My blackberry is there to kind of "comfort" me. It hard for alot of teenagers and young adults because nowadays it is harder for the technology to stay away from us. The more years that go by the more virtual with our hobbys and as people so i wouldnt be surprised if there was split personalities.

2. The definition of Net neutrality is a principle that used by networks that try to acces the Internet advocating no restrictions or any type of way that communication is used. To me I think Net neautrality is just allowed users to freely use the internet yet being aware of whats going on without any type of strict action if it is harmless.

City lights

I believe that women are portrayed in movies by most sex objects. In this industry sex sells and the better package as body wise the better and more used you are in movies. Most actresses lose alot of weight or gain alot of weight for movie roles. I do believe that there are some women in the movie industry who try to break away from that stereotype like Monique who just won a Academy Award for her abused mother role in the movie Precious. It just shows how it can affect women because there have been stories about girls being told that they have to be skinny to get anywhere in the media industry which cause alot of controversy when you see young actresses passing away from drug overdose and depression.

Walter Benjamin

Soldier without Swords

This was interesting movie because it showed how alot of the Black journalists risked their lives for their own freedom of speech. Especially at time where slavery and discrimination was a all time high for minorities, being in a job role and successful reaching out to Americans was very interesting. With the rise of the Black press it was an opportunity for Black americans to show the their views on many issues like slavery, civil rights and the work force with leaders like Ida B. Wells and Fredrick Douglas.

Style Wars

I recently watched the Style wars documentary about the graffitti writers in New York City. I thought it was interesting that they found it being art, relating it to hip hop and its culture. I never realized that there were hidden message on why they put grafitti on the subway trains. Instead of violence they use this method to spread their freedom of speech and creativity. I could understand why the city would be upset by the vandalism of these subway trains because they want the trains to be clean and maintable. Yet i love the fact that the grafitti culture crossed over to art museaums all around the country and the world. It just shows the diversity of the art and hip hop culture.

My 1st blog entry

Well, My name is Nyambura Mbugua. I am a junior at SUNY Colllege at Old Westbury. I am also a media and communications major. At school I am a Public Relations director at Old Westbury Web Radio. As PR Director i am in charge of promoting the station whether it is through social networks like Twitter, Facebook, or on campus at different events. I am also in charge of making flyers and the OWWR Website. As PR Director it gets hard because a lot of what i have to do involves a lot of concentration and time. My skills when it comes to graphics helps me get better at Public Relations. I am also outspoken and not afraid to speak infront of crowds so I meet many different people in the media industry and PR firms.

I am always on the computer learning how to get better at my graphics and being more effective to the "eye of the audience". Most of the time at the station i promote through Twitter and Facebook because many college students have these accounts and its easier for them to access. I have been nominated for a total of 8 Media and Art awards in the past two years.

As for my career, I am very well rounded especially because i learned a lot of radio. I know how to produce, engineer, and host my own show since i was a freshmen. Which looks great on my resume because i have more to back myself up with for the future. Previously i have interned for Cumulus Media that was tied with 5 different radio stations including Radio Disney. I was also offered a job as a freelance dj host for one of the radio stations as well. I am currently looking for internships at record labels as a promotions intern so all the things i have done for the past two years have been worth it because I used to be a biology major but switched to media because it was more me. The more I am in media the more i love it...and im always looking higher and never settling for less.
